Liner Notes

  • The GRAMMYs were on the night of this record.
  • Christy went to the GRAMMYs a few years ago and all of the acts were terrific.
  • Next year Pat is going to see if he can go see the dress rehearsal for the GRAMMYs. David Wilde hinted that it might be possible so Pat is going to pursue it.
  • Christy has discovered it is not easy to get a non-stop trip from LA to Cleveland. That being said Christy and Gary have their travel arrangements made for the Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
  • It was really hard for Christy to pick two songs from Bon Jovi, so she didn't and will use one of her Bon Jovi picks for The Cars. Pat had the opposite problem. He found it really hard to whittle his selection down to only two songs.
  • On today's episode they are going to feature the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2018 in alphabetical order.
  • Bon Jovi had the most fan votes to get into the Hall of Fame with 1,162,000. They have been an active act from 1984 to the present. They have 13 studio albums, 6 of them went to number 1, 29 million albums sold in the US and 105 million albums sold worldwide, 17 Top 40 hit singles, 10 in the Top 10 and 4 that made it to number one. They also have two American Music Awards and one GRAMMY.
  • The members of Bon Jovi that are being inducted into the Hall are: Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, David Bryan, Tico Torres, Alec Jon Such, and Hugh McDonald.
  • Howard Stern will be inducting the band. Pat is worried that Howard will detract from Bon Jovi's induction by making it about himself.
  • Runaway was on the first self tiltled album, Bon Jovi, and was recorded as a single. None of the members of Bon Jovi actually played on the single other than Jon.
  • Pat has gone to the gym for 28 days straight at the gym. He started January 1.
  • Christy thinks Bon Jovi's set list will be Livin' On A Prayer, Wanted Dead Or Alive, and It's My Life or You Give Love A Bad Name. Pat believes it will be Wanted Dead Or Alive, Runaway, and It's My Life.
  • The Cars had over 500,000 fan votes. They were active from 1978 to 1987 and 2011. They had 7 studio albums, 17 million albums sold in the US, 13 Top 40 singles, 4 made it to the Top 10, and were nominated for four GRAMMY Awards. They won the first ever MTV Video Of The Year award.
  • The members of The Cars that are being inducted are: Elliot Easton, Greg Hawkes, David Robinson, Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr. Ben passed away 17 years ago.
  • Pat thinks that they could possibly be inducted by Gwen Stefani or Roy Thomas Baker (their first producer). Kyle thinks it could possibly be Rivers Cuomo from Wheezer since Ric Ocasek produced Wheezer's first album.
  • Christy is sure they will play Just What I Need as part of their set list but just has no idea about the other songs because there are just so many. Pat thinks the set list will be Good Time Roll, Shake It Up, and You Might Think.
  • Dire Staits had 613,000 fan votes to get into the hall. They were active from 1978 to 1991 and had 6 studio albums, one of which went to number one, 14 million album sales in the US. They had 4 Top 40 singles, 3 that became Top 10 singles, and one that made it to number one. They also have four GRAMMY Awards.
  • Members of Dire Straits that are being inducted are Alan Clark, Guy Fletcher, John Illsley, David Knopfler, Mark Knopfler, and Pick Withers.
  • Pat thinks they may be inducted by Sting.
  • Christy thinks that they will at least have Money For Nothing and Sultans Of Swing in their set list. Pat thinks it will consist of those two songs and Tunnel Of Love.
  • The Moody Blues was really tough for Christy to pick songs. She loves them and saw them live in the 80s. That was back in the era where you had to camp out overnight to get really good tickets. She showed u aroung 5 AM for The Moody Blues tickets and there was absolutely no one in line. She got from row seats and had a blast.
  • Inductees for The Moody Blues are Graham Edge, Justin Haywood, John Lodge, Mike Pinder, Ray Thomas, and Denny Laine.
  • The Moody Blues are the only band that had their first three Top 10 songs in three different decades.
  • Pat thinks the set list for The Moody Blues will be Knights In White Satin, Question, and Your Wildest Dreams. Christy thinks it will be Question, Knights In White Satin, and I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band).
  • Christy thinks that John Anderson will induct The Moody Blues.
  • Pat checked his iTunes to see if he already had any songs from Nina Simone and he had two.
  • Pilar (Pat's wife) saw Nina Simone twice. Once when she was in college and then when she first moved to LA at the Hollywood Bowl. The first time she saw her was an accident. She was at a bar, in New York State, with her then boyfriend (not Pat) who was visiting. They thought it would be fun to take a train into New York City. When they got there they didn't know where to go. So they jumped in a cab and asked to be taken to the village because they had heard of that. They were dropped of right by a jazz club and decided to go in. Nina Simone was performing there that night.
  • Sister Rosetta Tharpe was inducted for her influence over early Rock 'N Roll stars.
  • She was a pioneer in her guitar technique and was one of the first popular recording artists to use heavy distortion on her guitar.

Episode 338: 2017 Year In Review

Episode 338: 2017 Year In Review
The whole Rock Solid crew, sans April, get together to drink wine and play music that was released this past year! Good riddance 2017 and never show your face around these parts again! If you like people talking over each other for 3 hours then this episode is for you!

Liner Notes

  • Kyle takes the reigns early by directing the intros.
  • Apologies to April Richardson who could not make it. It's almost impossible to schedule five people to be on the podcast at the same time.
  • Bose the engineers of some of the world's best audio equipment, including the Bose QuietComfort 35 Noise Canceling Headphones. Everyone in studio is wearing them.Bose invented the technology in noise cancelling headphones 40 years ago. Bose believes in blocking out sounds and distractions so you can immerse yourself in what you truly love! Bose - Get Closer.
  • This is possibly the last Bose ad. Pat is shooting to get microphones next.
  • Come see kyle and Pat at the San Francisco Sketchfest with special guest Rick Spingfield. Let's sell this thing out!
  • Larry Larson set Pat a list of people we lost in 2017: Tom Petty, Glen Campbell, Walter Becker, Pat DiNizio, David Cassidy, Malcom Young, Gordon Downie, Greg Allman, Chester Bennington, Chris Cornell, Chuck Berry, and Al Jarreau.
  • He missed a few: Fats Domino, Lil Peep, J. Geils, and Della Reese
  • Congratulations to Christy Straton who successfully campaigned to get The Cars into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. She is so excited!
  • Pat thinks Iron Maiden should get into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame before Judas Priest. Everyone has really mixed reactions to that proclamation.
  • There is lot's of discussion about wether Bon Jovi or shouldn't have gotten in. In the end Bon Jovi got more votes than anyone else and still sells out stadiums. Murray is still very against Bon Jovi getting in despite these facts.
  • Mike and Pat met Jeff Lynne and he was wearing sunglasses at night. After the screening they went to the same bar (they were invited and not some kind of stalkers) and saw Eric Idol, George Harrison's widow and son, Haley Joel Osment, Sarah Sutherland, Joe Walsh, and Steve Lukather. Steve Lukather looked at Pat funyy like three times before Pat reminded him that he was from the Rock Solid podcast. Then it clicked for him.
  • Lukather was just in a new rock documentary called Hired Guns. If you don't like Billy Joel, you really won't like him after watching this documentary.
  • Murray gets his braces off in two weeks. He has had them on for about two years and hasn't smiled the whole time.
  • No one but Pat realized that the spaceship on the Boston albums is really a guitar. I find that really hard to believe...
  • Haim is on the hook to be on the show. In the meantime here is some Este Haim bass face.

    Este Haim bass face
  • Christy tells the story of how she met Tom Petty on King of the Hill. Tom played a character called "Lucky" who was "like Tom Petty but without the success." Tom was down to earth and always came down to the studio to do his recordings for the show with everyone else, even though he didn't have to.
  • The worst song of the year is Take A Knee My Ass.
