Liner Notes

  • This week Pat and Kyle are joined by 2nd time co-host Alexi Lalas. "Concert Wife" Suzanne Dillingham is silently (mostly) listening in studio.
  • Kyle has no idea why Alexi comes here. He has no idea why he listens to the show. They have no business even being in the same room as Alexi. "We're just a couple of jackasses and I don't even understand why he is here!"
  • Alexi's last episode was The Producer's Chair #2.
  • Alexi is still working for Fox Sports, talking about soccer when ever he can, raising his kids in Southern California, and playing music. He is just starting a new album that will be out next year just in time for the men's World Cup.
  • Alexi is a fan of Def Leppard. He doesn't like everything they put out but he is a fan.
  • On Through the Night is their first album and Kyle already has questions. He is wondering why the cover of the album has two Def Leppard logos on it. Pat thinks that they were both on the original cover and is not a result of some reissue mistake. The cover has a large tractor trailer on it with a huge guitar on the back. Pat speculates that the guitar is being delivered to Boston.
  • When Alexi was the President of the LA Galaxy, David Beckham came to play for them. Alexi used the song Hello America just before David was introduced in the stadium. Pat speculates that maybe picking the music for the introduction isn't the job for the President of the organization, but David insisted that while it may have been a little bit of micro management he really wanted to use that music.
  • Alexi doesn't think On Through the Night is a great album, but there are portions he likes. This is before they were a metal of hair band. They were just teenagers trying to figure out who they were going to be.
  • Alexi attacks Pat, good-naturedly, over his pick of the song Wasted. "Why do you like that song? I just don't understand, that is such a shit song!" Pat likes it for running on the treadmill. Alexi believes it was a waste to even play the song. Pat is now questioning the pick and it may be a crappy song, but he does listen to it. Alexi asks him if there is a crappy song from his favorite group that is horrible and he doesn't like. Pat immediately throws out Man-U-Lip-U-Lator from Cheap Trick as that song.
  • For the second album, High 'n' Dry, Def Leppard gets hooked up with Mutt Lange and he really brings the heat. This is when the band really starts getting good (or going down the drain if you liked the first album).
  • Everyone wonders if the song On Through the Night was written for the first album or was written because the name is a good one. Pat brings up the song American Fool by John Cougar (Mellencamp) that was left off the album by the same name initially. It was included on the 2005 reissue of American Fool as a bonus track.
  • Star Child makes a guest appearance.
  • Pyromania is the third album and it is really getting hard to play anything that isn't a big hit. Around this time is when Pete Willis is starting to have issues with alcoholism. Phil Collen is all over this album and in the videos taking Phil's place. Alexi points out Phil is a huge upgrade for the band as a musician, a writer, a performer, and a singer.
  • Photograph is what Alexi thinks is a perfect rock song. When you break it down it's perfect. It has perfect vocals and the way Mutt takes different parts of the song and changes them from where you think they are going and fitting them all back together, and that last note just going on... perfect.
  • Pat likes Bon Jovi better than Def Leppard. Alexi isn't sure, but does agree that Bon Jovi has aged better.
  • After Pyromania is when the band takes a hiatus because Rick Allen, the drummer, loses an arm in a car accident. His arm was reattached after the accident but due to an infection had to be re-amputated. With encouragement from guys in the band Rick was allowed time to figure out how to play drums again. They come back with their biggest album, Hysteria.
  • Pat gets a text from his 12 year old daughter "Everything is well, when will you be home?" Cat in the Hat references ensue. Pat mentions that she just got the lead in her musical 42nd Street.
  • Pat asks Alexi how he became a soccer player. Alexi grew up going between Detroit and Greece. He was the American red headed kid playing in the sandlots of Athens, Greece. He knew he excelled at soccer at a young age. His parents were academics and weren't into sports, but they appreciated that he was good and supported him.
  • After Hysteria, the group lost Steve Clark to alcoholism, He was only 30 when he passed.
  • Pat remembers that Adrenalize came out the same day as the two Bruce Springsteen albums Human Touch and Lucky Town. So, he had to purchase three albums that day. Two of them were really great and one was a huge disappointment. That album was Adrenalize. This is where the group starts to go off the rails.
  • The next album was Slang and at this point they really weren't selling many records. Alexi really had to work really hard to even pick one song off the album. He did pick a second, but it was the fist cross-over pick of the episode. Pat loves the album.
  • Euphoria has a crappy album cover. Kyle thinks it looks like someone's kid was in a beginner PhotoShop class. Alexi thinks they come back a little bit on this album.
  • Yeah! is a cover album. There are a lot of bonus tracks that you can get by buying different versions of this album. In all there are 20 songs to be had.
  • Pat is not a fan of the Tim McGraw country cross-over on Songs from the Sparkle Lounge.
  • in 2011, a live album is released, Mirror Ball, that has three new tracks on it and pat loves them all. He brought It's All About Believin' for our enjoyment.
  • Bose the engineers of some of the world's best audio equipment, including the Bose QuietComfort 35 Noise Canceling Headphones. Everyone in studio is wearing them.Bose invented the technology in noise cancelling headphones 40 years ago. Bose believes in blocking out sounds and distractions so you can immerse yourself in what you truly love! Bose - Get Closer.
