Episode 307: The Warmth of Vinyl: Vol. 2

Episode 307: The Warmth of Vinyl: Vol. 2
No CDs, no mp3s, no wav files not even a computer because this week Pat and Co-Host April Richardson are playing nothing but good old-fashioned records. So sit back and get ready to enjoy pops, crackles, skips and hopefully some laughs because it's time to hear the warmth of vinyl... Vol. 2
From June 1, 2017

With your hosts:

Pat Francis

April Richardson

Liner Notes

  • April is back! The reason they are recording at Francis Manor is because Pat’s wife Pilar is out of the country and he doesn’t want to leave his daughters alone. He’s afraid of something happening to him (a car crash, smooshed to death by a giant fat man on the bus, what have you) and the girls are home alone, hungry and scared. April was legit home alone all the time as a kid. Pat rewarded April for her road trip to his house with a bag of candy and a mysterious gift..

  • Today’s episode is The Warmth of Vinyl Vol. 2. They’re playing every song off vinyl records. Pat decrees they can’t use a computer to look stuff up. There’s some talk about old magazines like Q, NME, Spin, Creem, Melody Maker. April used to burn limited punk rock 7” onto CDs.

  • They’re recording on Easter Monday. April went to the beach with her ex-boyfriend. Pat took the girls to a Japanese restaurant. April remains friendly w/ all her ex’s except for one. Being friends after a breakup is tough; April notes that there is a difference between friends and friendly.

  • April doesn’t buy as much vinyl anymore. Pat gets his signed vinyl album covers professionally framed. April buys hers on the cheap on Amazon. She had to take down the R.E.M. Chronic Town EP from her wall because the gargoyle on the cover scared her at night.

  • The record player being used is not of the same quality as the one used in Vol. 1 with Christy. The songs sound much tinnier than before.

  • Vinyl is quite incovenient. April enjoys looking at the booklets and the covers though. Pat was afraid of giving out his albums because they would come back all fucked up. April didn’t let hers go because they might not come back at all.

  • When April was living in England, she became obsessed with British comedy duo Vic and Bob, a.k.a. Reeves and Mortimer. She consumed everything they did, including Vic's solo album. They are huge in England, but can't get arrested in the States. There are a lot of big British comedy duos: The Mighty Boosh, Dick and Dom, Ant and Dec, Mitchell and Webb, Fry and Laurie, Little Britain.

  • Chrissie Hynde offered Johnny Marr a spot in the Pretenders. But Johnny is a free spirit, unbound by the chains of monogamy. In other words, a multi-band man.

  • Pat's copy of Cat Scratch Fever is signed by Derek St. Holmes. Pat has met Ted Nugent. He was actually quite nice. This leads to a big discussion about getting stuff signed, some artists being dicks, some artists being nice, and the idea of being "off the clock."

  • Pat wants Aimee Mann on the podcast, but he wants her in the main Rock Solid Studios, not Francis Manor. There are people whom April’s never met before until they came to her apartment for her podcast, for example Turtle from Entourage.

  • According to Kyle, Edwyn Collins looks like "a handsome Max Headroom."

  • April’s original Rough Trade pressing of Hatful of Hallow (which she never opened) has a GIANT scratch in it. It amazingly still plays.

  • Pat compares Dave Davies to Prince, which April does not agree with. She puts Prince on a cut above because he was one guy playing all the instruments on many of his albums and he was a virtuoso at it. “And yet, not that good at elevators,” retorts Pat.

  • In a discussion on funky Nine Inch Nails and early Ministry, April slams those artists like Kenny G who stole the saxophone from “punk as fuck” songs.

  • Pat took his sister and saw Madonna and The Beastie Boys on the Like a Virgin tour. He doesn’t remember anything about the Beasties because he wasn’t paying attention to them.

  • You can add Bis to the list of bands that April is friends with. When she was writing zines in the UK, the band would send her updates about their careers. April has thought about writing a book about her musical experiences, but she has doubts on if anyone would read it.

  1. I wish a double decker bus would crash into me every time you have April Richardson on... fer sure dude. Such a hipster, name dropping, valley girl wannabe and derails the show every time she's on. Bloody awful.
    Love,
