Episode 243: New & Classic

Episode 243: New & Classic
Pat's daughter Sara returns to the show to introduce her Dad to some actual "New Bands."
From March 10, 2016

With your host:

Pat Francis

00:00:00 Pat and Sara Dodson (Pat's daughter) welcome us to the show. For the third week in a row, this week's Rock Solid is being recorded at Francis Manor. Pat has decided that since he starts every show with the phrase "music, both new and classic," he has decided to actually live up to it. Sara is obviously the source for this new music. Her oldest song is from 2006, for Pete's sake. Sara is 15 and super into music like Pat. While Pat had record stores as a teenager, Sara has Spotify. She doesn't even use iTunes. Ah, kids these days (I say as a 23-year-old).
00:05:00 Sara is going to play "new band" songs, while Pat is going to play classic rock songs. New and Classic. I expect there to be a lot of these on both sides of the table:
Sara kicks things off with the band Metric. She plays "Lie Lie Lie" off the album Pagans in Vegas. Sara calls it her jam, reminding us all of another lady who uses such vernacular.
Pat's first classic rock pick is a trio of Canadians that doesn't ring any bells for Sara. It's Rush with "Limelight" off the album Moving Pictures.
00:10:00 Is there anything for Sara to grab onto with that? Do the dulcet tones of Geddy Lee or the technical prowess of Neil Peart penetrate that 15-year-old soul? "No." Well, okay then. Sara's next pick is a guy named George Ezra. Off the album Wanted on Voyage, the song is "Listen to the Man". Ezra's appearance surprises Pat. He's got the voice of a husky black man, but the body of a svelte British schoolboy.
00:15:00 Coming up next, some prog rock bull sugar (trying to keep it clean for the younger generation) in the form of Yes. Pat plays "Owner of a Lonely Heart" from the big album 90125. It's a little too over the top for Sara. Wow, if that version of Yes is too over the top, I can only imagine what she would think of "Close to the Edge."
The next new artist that Sara brings to the table is a lad named Troye Sivan. Fun fact: He played the kid version of Wolverine in that god awful X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie. But we won't hold that against him. Sara plays "Heaven" featuring Betty Who off the album Blue Neighbourhood.
00:20:00 Pat notices that when Sara plays her songs, they are both rocking out. When Pat plays his songs, only he is rocking out. He puts his theory to the test with his next pick, The Doors. He plays "Light My Fire" off their self-titled debut album. Aaaaaaaand Sara is laughing. She's laughing because A) the beginning keyboard riff sounds like the background music to a Candyland video game, and B) the lead singer sounds like he's 80 years old. Theory: PROVEN!
00:25:00 Sara's next new artist is simply called SOAK. It's just one girl named SOAK. Sara plays "Sea Creatures" off the album Before We Forgot How to Dream. Pat likes it a lot.
Up next for Pat is the band Thin Lizzy. Off the album Jailbreak, it's the classic "The Boys Are Back in Town". Pat sings a few bars.
00:30:00 Pat also likes to sing a little Adele in the car, much to the chagrin of everyone with working ears. But enough of that nonsense, Sara has a newer artist to play. It's musician (and sheep farmer) Nicole Reynolds with "We've So Far to Go" off the album Wolves Won't Eat Us.
It was only a matter of time before Pat played some Queen. He plays the most popular Queen song ever, "Bohemian Rhapsody" from the album A Night at the Opera.
00:35:00 The whole Francis is clan is in the car, "Bohemian Rhapsody" comes on. Pat starts singing a part and nobody thinks Pat is singing it correctly. They don't think Bismillah is the right word, but it turns out it is! Pat is right like always! What does Sara think of Queen? She, and I'm paraphrasing her, would not willingly listen to Queen with her friends. YOUTHS!!!!!
*sigh* Okay, moving on. Sara's next new artist is called Joywave. Off the album How Do You Feel Now?, the song is called "Nice House".
00:40:00 Pat's next classic pick is "Go Your Own Way" by Fleetwood Mac from the album Rumours. Sara does not mind it, but she also wouldn't play it intentionally. At this point, that's a victory for Pat. Pat does not try to drill specific bands into his daughters' heads, he just plays them around the house (and they promptly get sick of them). Sara is much more influential on her sister Rita.
The next pick for Sara is known as Say Hi and it's off an album called Bleeders Digest (their second concept album about vampires). The song is called "The Grass Is Always Greener". Pat likes how it's real musicians playing real instruments in a real location.
00:45:00 It was also only a matter of time before Pat played some of The Kinks. Off their self-titled debut album, it's "You Really Got Me". Sara loves it. SHE ACTUALLY LOVES SOMETHING THAT PAT PLAYED!!! WE DID IT!!!!!!!!!!
We come off that massive win with a band called MisterWives. Pat and Sara recently saw them. They've got a lot of energy, good show. Sara plays "Vagabond" from the album Our Own House.
00:50:00 Pat plays his most current song... from the year 1987. Off the album Appetite for Destruction, it's "Sweet Child o' Mine" by Guns N' Roses. Sara likes the guitar work. The voice is... unique.
WATERS is the band that opened for MisterWives. They are your typical grunge hippy stereotypes, according to Sara. One guy looks like Jesus hunched over a guitar, a girl has pink hair and what looks like a Tribble in each armpit, another girl has only a tamborine. Basically someone went to a food co-op and handed out instruments to random people. But Sara likes them.
00:55:00 Sara plays "Got to My Head" off the album What's Real. Pat is a little upset how a band like WATERS--easily accessible, radio friendly--can have a career in music, but they probably won't be rich and famous. Such is the nature of the business these days.
A band that has had longevity and a career in music is Styx. Pat plays "Come Sail Away" off the album The Grand Illusion.
01:00:00 ANIMA! Yes, that is a band name. Sara plays "Serendipity" off their self-titled album. In a moment of familial cuteness, Pat and Sara independently thought that the lead singer sort of sounds like Adele. Awwwwwwwwww.
In a moment that isn't as cute, Pat plays Sara some Journey. It's "Wheel in the Sky" off the album Infinity.
01:05:00 Here are Sara's thoughts about Journey:
"Congratulations, you've managed to find a band that I like literally nothing about."
- Sara
Sara is not a fan of Journey. Her mother Pilar is not a fan of Journey. Pat, meanwhile, has Steve Perry's autograph.
Sara shakes off the falsetto arena rock and brings on a band called Broods. Wait... did someone say Broods?

Nevermind. Sara plays "Superstar" off the album Evergreen. Sara probably listens to more female solo artists and more bands fronted by guys.
Pat completes his trio of one-word bands with Kansas. The song is "Point of Know Return" from the album Point of Know Return.
01:10:00 Pat is worried that if he listens to more Kansas, he will end up really liking them. "They're doing their job," according to Sara. She's got no beef with the boys in Kansas. And she doesn't have a beef with her next pick, the lovely ladies of HAIM. The song is "My Song 5" from the album Days Are Gone. Pat was actually the one who turned Sara on to HAIM.
01:15:00 Pat's last pick are the legendary Led Zeppelin. Off of Led Zeppelin IV, it's "Rock and Roll". What does Sara think of Zeppelin? "I don't know... I've heard a lot of their songs." I'll call that one a draw.
Plugs time. You can find Sara on YouTube channel Probably Sara, or you can follow her on Twitter @Probably_Sara. She also has a Spotify account where you find her public playlists, just type "sakicookie" in the search bar.
01:20:00 Thanks to Sara for coming on the podcast and putting up with Pat's shenanigans for the umpteenth time. I'm sure it was quite the trek from her bedroom. We end with Sara's favorite band, Twenty One Pilots. Off the album Blurryface, it's "The Judge".
