Episode 103: Trios

Episode 103: Trios
Three really is a magic number as the trio of Gary, Pat and Matt play songs from bands that are tres cool!

From June 27, 2013
00:00:00 The team kicks it off all casual-like.

Pat brings in a the segment where the gang compares two songs to see if they are a little too similar.

  • Green Day - "Warning"
  • The Kinks - "Picture Book"

It's unanimous that this is a rip off!

And (as the ultimate irony for a segment about ripping off previous work) these two songs were tried before in Episode 18! That's called double jeopardy, my friend, and that shit is unconstitutional!

Patrick Francis Dodson, for the crime of thumbing your nose at the foundation of our country, we have no choice but to give you a

Matt suggested next time that they do "Star Wars Character or NPR Host"
00:10:00

  • Jude from LA suggests that the team check out Jakob Dylan's solo stuff, especially "War Is Kind" off the album Seeing Things.
  • Ryan from SC has a song suggestions for all: Pat - "Green Sky, Green Lake" by Dead Meadow; Gary - "Mer" by Chelsea Wolfe; Matt: "Emcees Smoke Crack" by Edan.
  • Carson from Berlin suggests "Bonus Tracks" and "Anti-Music" shows.
00:15:00

Matt suggests the "Under Pressure" a capella video that's on YouTube, as well as the accompanying Huffington Post article, where Bowie does not come off well.

Pat introduces a new segment called Unrecommend.

He use to think that Dirty Work was the Rolling Stones' worst album, but that was before he heard Their Satanic Majesties Request. While it has a couple of good songs, there is plenty of suck on it.

00:20:00 Gary kicks off the topic by playing "Da Da Da" by Trio from their self-titled album.
Hey daddy-o! Pat is going to play us some hep music, dig? Okay, I'm done. From The Stray Cats - "Rock This Town" from their self-titled album.

Gary stays true to his Northwest roots by laying down some POTUS: The presidents of the united states of america - "Lump" from THEIR self-titled album.

Pat goes prog with Emerson, Lake and...Powell?? Who knew? Emerson, Lake and Powell - "Touch and go" from (you guessed it) THEIR self-titled album.
00:25:00 Matt suggests that they do a "Jock Jams" show.
Gary gives us some newer Ben Folds Five - "Michael Praytor, Five Years Later" from The Sound of the life of the mind
Pat plays some early Goo Goo Dolls - "Girl right next to me" from Superstar Car Wash.
00:30:00 Next is Homer Simpson's favorite band: Grand Funk Railroad - "Bad Time" from All the Girls in the World Beware!!!
Pat, apparently, is mad at us. Why else would he play C.C. Deville's led band Samantha 7 - "Framed" from their self-titled album? [ed. note: Actually, it's not that bad]
00:35:00

Gary gets into the meat of the matter by playing his favorite trio: Minneapolis' own Hüsker Dü - "These important years" from Warehouse Songs and Stories.

Pat continues to misbehave by playing a band that's really isn't a trio. BS, right?! Well, the Foo Fighters, for their album There is nothing left to lose, recorded as a trio, so I guess it's okay.. Here's "Next Year"

Little known fact, Dave Grohl was in a Seattle based rock trio in the 90s. Nirvana - "Pennyroyal Tea" from In Utero.
00:40:00 Pat mercifully skips Genesis in favor of Blink-182 - "I'm Feeling this" from their self-titled fifth album.
Gary breaks out The Jam - "This is the modern world" from an album of the same name.
00:45:00 Pat plays Canada's premiere power trio (sorry Triumph): Rush - "Working them angels" from Slings and Arrows.
Again from the Mighty Northwest comes sexy rockers named after a street: Sleater Kinney - "You're No Rock n' Roll Fun" from All hands on the bad one.
You can't have a trio show without The Police - "It's alright for you" from Reggatta de blanc.
00:50:00 Gary implores you: get yourself some Papas Fritas - "Guys don't lie" from their self-titled album.
Pat plays some pre-goofy, pre-MTV, pre-Eliminator ZZ Top - "Cheap Sunglasses" from Degüello
Gary answers with "Francene" from Rio Grande Mud.
00:55:00 Matt finishes up with FannyPack - "Seven One Eight" (Brooklyn!) from See You Next Tuesday.
