Episode 107: Spell It Out!

Episode 107: Spell It Out
Letters entertain you with a rock 'n roll spelling bee!

From July 25, 2013

00:00:00 Specials guest Gary Lucy stops by the studio today!
Gary tells us about his recent sleep study. Apparently he has some serious apnea, but now that he has one of those sleep machines, he feels like a new man. Just imagine, now that he's getting some real rest, how much more he'll be able to rawk!

  • The guys are stoked, because a certified woman called into the show. Unfortunately, Beth McKey (?) bails on the call after a couple seconds. She must have realized that the gang wouldn't know how to respond to a girl. Thanks for saving the guys that embarrassment, Beth!
  • Jim from Austin calls to suggest a show called "We Built This City on Rock n Roll" that highlights the music from different towns.
  • Rodney from CO suggests a show artists who change their musical genre for an album (Garth Brooks/Chris Gains, Ice T/Body Count).
  • Travis from CA, perhaps in honor of Comicon this week, thinks that a superhero themed show would be a good idea, if only to remind people of Prince's Batdance (which, by the way, is favorite song of Comedy Bang Bang host Scott Aukerman).
00:10:00 Pat thanks the listeners who have donated a little cash to the show, which you can do through this very website.

Kyle Dodson, comedian and nephew of Pat, is with the gang this episode, which is great news. In less positive news, so is Dirty iPod.

Dirty iPod had a few questions for the crew and he seems to be trying his best. At first. But in the end, he can't deny his true nature. Damn you Dirty iPod!!

And now a commercial break

Matt has K-Solo explain the topic

Gary kicks off this week's topic with Television - "Friction" from the album Marquee Moon.
Pat plays the quintessential spelling song: Aretha Franklin - "Respect" from the album I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You.

Okay, Gary claims that this is the regional hit of all regional hits. It reportedly caused a sensation in the ATL. It's Pat Wilson - "Bop Girl".

00:20:00 Pat calls an audible! While taping the big show he remembered this song, written by Lemmy for the The Ramones - "R.A.M.O.N.E.S." from the album Greatest Hits LIVE.
Gary's next jam is The Fall - "C.R.E.E.P."
This next guy, apparently, is a huge asshole. On top of that, he can't spell! John Mellencamp - "L.U.V." from the album Dance Naked.
00:25:00 Gary represents the Great Northwest by laying down Seattle's own Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - "Can't Hold Us" from the album The Heist.
This is part of Pat's workout playlist, the ladylumped one: Fergie - "Glamorous" from the album The Dutchess.

Gary spins some old school capital-"C" Country: Tammy Wynette - "D-I-V-O-R-C-E" from the album Greatest Hits.

00:30:00 Gary double dips with Bobby Goldsboro - "Watching Scotty Grow" from his Best of.

Gary thinks that moron Scotty needs the discipline that only Luka's dad can give.

"Luka...I noticed in your card you spelled 'Father' D-I-C-K. "

- Pat as Luka's dad

Bobby Goldsboro was a staple in Pat's household growing up. Recently Matt was looking through his dad's record collection and he found a couple of weird ones:

Ray Charles: The Exciting YearsDrugs Won't Get It, People WillHere You Come Again by Dolly Parton
00:35:00 Before he plays his next song, Pat makes it clear that just because he plays the song doesn't mean he likes the song. Having said that, here's John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band - "C.I.T.Y." from the album Tough All Over.

Pat starts his acronym chunk with some nice fellows from New York City. Village People - "Y.M.C.A." from the album Cruisin'.

He follows up with AC/DC - "C.O.D." from the album For Those About To Rock.

Gary starts his "Cheerleader Rhythm" chunk with Gwen Stefani - "Hollaback Girl" from the album Love. Angel. Music. Baby.

Pat had this song on his list too, which of course triggers a

Gary also plays:

  • Fishbone - "Ugly" from the self-titled EP.
  • Faith No More - "Be Aggressive" from the album Angel Dust.
  • Magnetic Fields - "Washington D.C." from the album 69 Love Songs.

Pat goes with a couple of hunky 70s/80s heartthrobs

Bay City Rollers - "Saturday Night" from the album Bay City Rollers and Hall & Oates - "Method Of Modern Love" from the album Big Bam Boom.

Gary recently showed Preston "So, I Married An Ax Murderer." Pat remembers liking Charles Grodin's cameo in that movie.

The criminally underrated Mr. Charles Grodin

Gary treats us to another chunk:

  • R.E.M. - "Harborcoat" from the album Reckoning.
  • Len - "Steal My Sunshine" from the album Can't Stop the Bum Rush.
  • The Pixies - "Velouria" from the album Bossanova.
Gary shares that Kim Deal is not touring with the Pixies, though another Kim is. Kim Shattuck, from The Muffs and episode 24 of Rock Solid, is taking her place. Since Gary has an in with Ms. Shattuck he all but guaranteed that he can get the Pixies on the show! Well, "guarantee" may be a bit strong...
Pat welcomes the British Invasion with The Kinks - "Lola" from the album Lola Vs Powerman & The Moneygoround.
00:50:00 Gary goes Broadway with Avenue Q - "Schadenfreude" from the Original Soundtrack.
Before he ends his list, Pat wants to recommend the new EP and video of The Pride of Erie PA.
Pat's last song is from the ageless Red Rocker Sammy Hagar - "Trans Am (Highway Wonderland)" from the album Street Machine.
00:55:00 Matt plays us out with a song from his youth (and from the super fun NBA Street 2): Pete Rock & CL Smooth - "They reminisce over you (T.R.O.Y.)" from Mecca and the Soul Brothers.

Episode 106: Rock Solid-opedia: Volume N

Episode 106: Rock Solid-opedia Vol. N
This is the 'N', beautiful friends... Volume N of the Rock Solid-opedia, that is!

From July 18, 2013
00:00:00 The gang and Kyle Dodson are in the studio today.

Gary recently enjoyed the new Big Star documentary Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me.

Gary talks about a teen movie from a few years ago titled Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging. Gary recommends the soundtrack, which includes a band called The Stiff Dylans. Pat feels that everything associated with the movie sounds dirty.

Gary introduces Rock Solid's new sponsor

It seems that drugs were a little too easy to get in the 70s.
This week is Rock Solid-opedia Volume N (Paula Deen's favorite letter)
Pat kicks off this volume with his favorite No Doubt album: Here's "Don't Let Me Down" from the album Rock Steady.
00:10:00 Gary plays an indie darling: The National - "Don't swallow the Cap" from the album Trouble Will Find Me.
Next are the progressive views of Ted Nugent - "Free For All" from the album Free For All.
A listener turned Gary onto this Scottish band: Noah & The Whale - "Silver & Gold" from the album Heart of Nowhere.

Pat next plays a guy who was weird before weird was cool: Gary Numan - "Cars" from the album The Pleasure Principle.

If you want to hear Gary Numan with some crunchy guitars check out his band Tubeway Army.

Here's Gary's favorite song of 2007: Kate Nash - "Foundations" from the album Made of Bricks.
00:20:00 Pat admires this artist's 1972 comeback hit and his feathery hair: Ricky Nelson - "Garden Party" from the album Garden Party. BTW, this song is apparently his reaction to a 1971 gig that went poorly where he was booed when he played his newer songs.
Some sweet musical criticism from Mojo Nixon - "Don Henley Must Die" from the album Otis.

Pat plays the catchy song of the 90s: New Radicals - "You Get What You Give" from the album Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too.

This song was in the running for the Low Times podcast's "Most 90s song of the 90s." It apparantly lost out to "Sex and Candy."

00:25:00 Gary plays his favorite song by this artist: The New Pornographers - "Sing Me Spanish Techno" from the album Twin Cinemas.

The first concert that Pat went to was Kiss during the Dynasty tour. The opening band during that tour was New England - "Don't Ever Wanna Lose Ya" from the album New England.

They first album was producted by Paul Stanley. He stops by the studio to explain his producting process.

This song freaked a young Gary Lucy the fuck OUT: The Normal - "Warm Leatherette" from the album Single.

Who knew the Monkees had any solo records? Pat did, cuz here is some Michael Nesmith - "Joanne" from the album Magnetic South.
00:35:00 Gary plays the third-tier Eagles: Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" from the album Will the Circle Be Unbroken.
Next Pat plays a song by Night Ranger. No, not that song. Instead, he plays that non-Sister-Christiany "Sentimental Street" from the album 7 Wishes. [ed. note: I remember very clearly my brother using a Sharpie to draw a Night Ranger logo on his painters cap. It looked pretty good].
00:40:00 Gary just finished a book by Chuck Klosterman titled I Wear The Black Hat, a book about villany. He devotes an entire chapter to our next artist: NWA - "Express Yourself" from the album Straight Outta Compton.
00:45:00 Pat goes for the Oscar juggarnaut Randy Newman - "Something Special" from the album Land Of Dreams.
Gary shares a suggestion from listeners Jim in IL and Mike in CT. They demand Kraut Rock! NEU! - "Hallogallo" from the album Neu. Hallogallo is German for 'wild party
Gary continues with the listener suggestions with Jack from FL's choise New York Dolls - "Pills" from the album self-titled debut.
He closes the request line with some NIN: NINE INCH NAILS - "Kinda I want to" from the album Pretty Hate Machine.
00:50:00 Pat ends his list with the 70s witch/sprite/cocaine enthusiast Stevie Nicks - "Enchanted" from the album The Wild Heart.

Gary burns through his N list with

  • The Negro Problem - "Buzzing" from the album Post-Minstrel Syndrome
  • New Order - "Perfect Kiss" from the album Lowlife
  • Neon Trees - "Everybody Talks" from the album Picture Show.
  • Nada Surf - "Electricution" from the album If I Had A Hi-Fi.

BTW, if you post a review of Rock Solid on iTunes you could win a copy of that Nada Surf album!

What band did Martha Quinn interview that didn't pan out to well because they were rude to her? 3/3

— Rock Solid (@RockSolidShow) July 19, 2013

Matt plays us out with Harvard fellow Nas - "New York State of Mind" from the album Illmatic.
